Knowing one’s past is the key to understanding your present. So in the African culture we have isthakazelo or isiduko, or Isitemo. It helps one understand who they are and where they come from. More so the mission, vision and purpose of their family. One also learns of their genealogy from isthakazelo or isiduko.
One thing I learnt from isthakazelo is that it was given based on character, trade, achievements, purpose, what you would achieve in society for society.
The Bible has a a lot of these genealogies and I always wondered why, they are in there. Here's what I learnt.
Knowing who your father is, where he comes from influences your thinking, your purpose and your vision. Imagine Isaac is told by Abraham that all families of the world were to be blessed through him. He then tells Jacob, who tells Judah.... Etc. They behaved like one blessed not one seeking a blessing. They behaved as kings not as subjects. They entered lands with the belief they would eat milk and honey and no one would stop them, why! Because that was their purpose.
Why does your family exist? What is your family vision? What legacy will you leave for your sons and daughters? What identity will you leave for them? Oh like so many families you will live without a vision, nor purpose?
Knowing your lineage would also help you break the curses that were passed from generations. I am fascinated by the Bible when it says so and so became a King at the age of 12 and his Father was so and so, but he feared God and destroyed the high places his father had built. Knowing your past helps you know who diverted from the vision, mission and purpose of your family.
Why are you named, Gumede, Tau, Mbedzi, Sithole, Mahlangu, Van Wyk, Smith, Gumbi, Tshuma, Khumalo? Look for the purpose of your clan, why were they named such, and how it spoke to their mission, vision and purpose. How does your clan benefit us on planet earth?
Lost is a family that knows not its roots. Dangerous is a man who impregnates, and leaves his children, dangerous is a man, who goes about sowing his seed and does not nourish it, nor give it worth, nor know its value. Lost is a man who thinks he is a father simply because he pays pap geld, maintenance. Money does not instill. discipline, vision, mission or purpose, money is not human.
Until we understand the value of where we come from, where we are going to, why we are going there then the value of our lives is not worth it.
Since the beginning of earth Satan has targeted the family, because family is the vehicle for mission vision and purpose. You as the man are the seed for this purpose, your pipe carries, something greater than Gold, how you handle your pipe determines the success or failure kof the next generation. Are you fighting for your family?
Ladies, you are the land, let no seed without identity be planted in you. You might grow weeds, if it has been planted, then let it be your life's mission to find out what kind of seed you carry, where it is comes from, what is its vision, mission and purpose.
No field was ever planted not to be harvested. We plant to harvest, harvest to eat or sell. Every seed has a purpose.
In closing, the ultimate vision, mission and purpose of Abraham's family was Jesus. After Jesus show me any genealogy!! Dololo.
So who are you? What does isthakazelo, Isiduko and Isitemo tell you about yourself?
